「戦争と平和！」
ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH OFFICE, LLC設計(ARO)のUS Armed Forces Recruiting Station(Location: Times Square, New York City)。ブロードウエイと７番街の区画で丁度地下鉄の鉄格子の上に設置してある。タイムズ・スクエアのネオンが降り注ぐ立地に米軍の施設であるサインとしてファサードをネオン管でデザインしている。ネオン管は青、赤、白を用いて星条旗を表している。ファサードのデザインは目立たせる意味もあるだろうがガラスの反射によって逆にネオンの映り込みがネオンの星条旗を消している。軍の施設が以外にもネオンの渦に紛れて隠れている。現地に行ってやっとスケール感、ネオンの光り、ファサードの映り込みが分かった建物だ。立地上車も人の流れも多い上に、周囲の環境がネオン看板広告だらけなので、知らなければ以外にも見逃してしまいかねない。訪れる時間によってファサードの表情は刻々と変化して見え方が違う。立地と建築と時間の大切さを気付かせてくれた建築だった。人を殺し合う軍隊とNYど真ん中の商業空間のギャップがいかにもアメリカっぽい。（参考資料/a+u00/06）
ARO's design for the Recruiting Station uses the neon vernacular of Times Square to distinguish the presence of the Armed Forces in this prominent location. The new structure, replacing the 1946 original, sits above a subway grate on a sliver of land between Broadway and Seventh Avenue. The building's long facades display American flags made from bands of fluorescent lights colored red, white and blue by reflective gels. The flags are integrated into a custom stainless steel and glass window wall. Reflective bollards frame the structure and outline the perimeter of the site.
